Center for Business and SocietyYehuda Elkana, Rector of the Central European University: A Vision for the Center The collapse of Enron and Andersen, followed by tens if not hundreds of known cases of corporate fraud and other cases of, to say the least, mismanagement, must introduce the thought that we are facing structural problems at the moral foundations of Western capitalist democracy. The enforcement of existing laws no longer seems to be enough. The answer to the current climate is to put our penny into developing an alternative approach. The Center for Business and Society hopes to contribute to that development. As an institution dedicated to the values of reflective and critical thinking, open society and democracy, the CEU is firmly behind this venture. We also expect that the Center will provide a key link between the CEU and the community—both locally and internationally—and between the CEU's new Business School and the rest of the University. Only an intellectual community that thinks beyond its immediate academic and geographic borders can successfully aspire to becoming a center of excellence. And that we-and the Center for Business and Society - aim to become. We wish the Center great success.
